While widely planted in Austria and Eastern Europe, it’s fairly rare to come across a Gruner Veltliner in the U.S. and especially in California. Winemaker/artist Darcie Kent makes this wine in honor of her Swiss grandfather, a winemaker who loved his Gruner. The beautiful landscape on the label reflects Darcie Kent’s serious artistic talent. The grapes that make up this wine hail from the Rava Blackjack Vineyard in Monterey County, CA. On the nose, expressive fruit aromas of tangerine, sliced apple, and melon blend with spearmint and floral notes. In the mouth, there’s moderate acidity, tart fruit flavors, and a slight bit of heat on the finish. This Gruner will make for a nice late summer/fall sipper and an interesting alternative to the typical white wine varietals.
I’ll be discussing a few more of Darcie Kent’s wines in the upcoming months. On a side note, is there a better grape varietal name than Gruner Veltliner?
